Week 3: Sidelined

Sidelined with a week of no running and further investigation into my left leg soreness.

This week

Monday was a planned rest day and enjoyed having the Labour Day public holiday for a long weekend.

Tuesday I had physio appointment number 3 for my left leg soreness. My physio Laura suggested it might be worth seeing a sports doctor. The physio treatment has been helping a bit but hasn’t really been able to relieve the tightness through the front of my hip. Also my leg had soreness had probably gotten a little worse this week often feeling sore walking.

I also contacted Chelsea and she decided no running this week. Which was definitely the right call as I’ve been feeling pretty sore walking and not sure I could run if I wanted to. Also dropped off all of my extra exercises, foam rolling, etc. for this week and will look at a more stream lined approach with my rehab physio.

Wednesday rest apart from walking to commute.

Thursday morning I met with Dr Ben Benassi at Melbourne Sports Medicine Centre. After talking through the history and a few tests he suspects femoral stress and referred me to get X-ray and MRI imaging done. Not wanting to waste any time I booked in that afternoon and had the imaging done and learned that MRI machines are very noisy!

Friday more rest, no exercise.

Saturday I decided to actually do something this week and went for a bike ride with Bree. I wasn’t sure how I would feel on the bike so had a plan to turn around earlier if needed, but the ride went well. Didn’t feel anything with my leg during the ride so that was good and got quite a decent 95 minute ride in.

Sunday another rest day. Interestingly I haven’t really missed running at all during the week, but Sunday morning You Yangs is like my version of going to church. Felt a bit strange to miss it.

So in summary a pretty average week. In some ways I kind of hope some underlying issue is uncovered that might explain why I haven’t been coping as well with training the past 4 weeks or so. At least then I can work on getting that sorted even if it puts me out for a bit.

Also unfortunate to hear Sharon reduced to easy runs only with hamstring soreness. She would have smashed Run for the Kids. At least Mechelle is killing it, so Mechelle it’s up to you to fly the flag for Chelsea’s Champions 🙂

Coming up

Tuesday I have an appointment with the Doctor to find out the results of the scans. Depending on that will determine on what happens next. At this point I’m expecting next week to just be cross training at a minimum.

The good news is Gold Coast is still a while off, so assuming I’m not out too long there’s still time to train well for the half marathon.

  • 21 April – XCR kicks off
  • 1 July – Gold Coast Half Marathon

I only heard on Thursday you have had a week off, Bree is in a Moon Boot and Sharon pulled out of Run for the kids. I am so ready to run on Sunday. Looking forward to a taper week and “wrapping myself in cotton wool” until then. Looking forward to flying the flag for all – I only hope I can run well on the day .

  2. Sharon

Every setup is an opportunity to make you stronger in a different way Ben. Get this leg sorted and then come back with a new hunger.
As for Mechelle- wrapped in cotton wool now and gold next week 😊
